Tips for your stay in Havana
Havana: must-sees!
Havana is the ideal destination for those who love culture and authenticity. Book your flight to Havana today and go on a city break to Havana and Trinidad. Discover how the famous Cuban cigars are rolled and be amazed by the rich colonial history.• La Habana Vieja is the old part of the city, which has been included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Here you can admire as many as nine hundred historical buildings, ranging from elegant Spanish colonial mansions and baroque churches to neoclassical public buildings.
• The Malecón is the esplanade connecting Old Havana and the modern city and features many pastel-coloured façades, balconies, pillars and ornaments facing the ocean.
• Plaza de Armas is the city’s main square, where the most affluent citizens used to have their homes. The square is surrounded by numerous palaces, a temple, the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales and El Castillo de la Real Fuerza (the city’s oldest fortress).
• El Capitolio Nacional is the perfect symbol of the former American influence. The architecture of the building, which now houses the Natural History Museum, is very impressive.
• Famous author Ernest Hemingway lost his heart to this region. You can follow in his footsteps by visiting his country house, the marina where he moored his boat and the bars he regularly visited. Raise your glass in “La Bodeguita del Medio”, Ernest Hemingway’s favourite bar.
• The Jardín Botánico Nacional is a beautiful 6 km² garden where you can find over 100,000 plant species from all over the world and carefully recreated ecosystems.
• Parque Central is located in the heart of the old city. Among the buildings surrounding the park are the theatre and several hotels where you can experience the genuine Cuban atmosphere. We challenge you to find out why there are exactly 28 royal palm trees on the square.
• At approximately 18 km from the city centre, you can find beautiful beaches, where the local residents like to spend time at the weekend.
• Thanks to the presence of Spanish-style buildings, Trinidad still exudes a 16th-century colonial atmosphere. Plaza Major is the central city square with several museums, a church and historic monuments just a stone’s throw away. Just outside Trinidad you can visit Valle de los Ingenios, a valley where once 70 sugar mills were operated by slaves.
• Santa Clara is most famous for Che Guevara’s mausoleum and the Tren Blindado monument. The mausoleum is the final resting place of Che Guevara and 16 of his fellow militants who died in Bolivia in 1967.
• Pinar del Río features many tobacco plantations where the famous Cohiba and Montecristo cigars are from. You can also visit its Rum Liqueur Factory and enjoy the beautiful nature of Pinar del Río, sometimes also called the ‘garden of Cuba’. With a flight to Varadero, you can discover all this by yourself!
• Santiago de Cuba is Cuba’s second largest city and boasts many historical buildings like Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca del Morro, a 17th-century fortress that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to the Afro Caribbean influences from nearby countries Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the streets of Santiago de Cuba are the birthplace of Salsa and Son.
